(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) – In the first GLIAC game of the season, Walsh fell to host Lake Erie by an 11-6 count at Britt Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers fall to 2-1 overall on the season. The Storm, which was also playing its first conference game of the season, improved to 3-1.
The Cavaliers started the game on fire with two goals in just over the first four minute of play and held a 3-1 advantage until near the 11-minute mark. At that time, Lake Erie rallied for the final four goals of the half in the midst of a 7-1 run that stretched midway through the third period.
Maria Nobile ended the run with a big goal as Walsh was down a player to make the score 8-5 with 11:30 left to go in the game. Just a few minutes later, Lake Erie scored while it was a player down to go back up by four goals with 8:49 to play.
Sam Paulson brought the Cavaliers back within three with a free position shot with 7:37 left, but again the Storm answered, this time 35 seconds later, on a score by Mallory Quiggle and held Walsh scoreless the rest of the way.
Walsh's offense was balanced as six different players scored. In addition to Nobile and Paulson, Sarah McCormick, Amanda Hodel, Aly Jajack, and Emma Armour all found the back of the net for the Cavs. Lane Brunkala assisted on McCormick's score to start the second half.
Danielle Acuna led the defense with three caused turnovers. McCormick and Nobile each won four draw controls.
Mikaela Faus took the decision between the pipes. She reached double-digits with 10 saves on 30 shots faced.
The Cavaliers return to action on the road at Tiffin this Thursday. First draw with the Dragons is set for 6 p.m.
