NORTH CANTON, Ohio - It took all seven matches but the Walsh Cavaliers men's tennis team rallied to defeat the Northwood Timberwolves on Saturday (Feb. 22) night at North Canton Racquet Club.
Walsh improved to 3-6 this season after beating the Timberwolves, the seventh ranked team in the Midwest ITA Rankings.
Walsh swept all three doubles matches, taking a 1-0 lead from the outset. Filipp Kulynych and Clemens Wagner started with a 6-1 third doubles win over David Sedlar and Tony Henrio. Jakob Riglewski teamed with Pedro Campos for a 7-5 win at second doubles versus Francois Sauerman and Mathis Violet. Dawson Drummond and Joao Campos finished off doubles play with a 7-6 (9-7) win at first doubles against Kobus Sauerman and Leon Grundstrom.
Grundstrom tied the match at one with a win in second singles while F. Sauerman made it 2-1 Northwood with a third singles win. Riglewski was a 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) winner at first singles over K. Sauerman as the match was tied 2-2. Kulynych put Walsh up 3-2 in fifth singles on a 6-4, 6-3 win against Violet. In fourth singles, Northwood tied the match at three points each to make sixth singles a winner-take-all situation. Gui Carneiro battled to a 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) win against Henrio, clinching the match for the Cavaliers.
Walsh travels to Mercyhurst, ranked 2nd in the Atlantic Region, on Thursday (Feb. 27).
