NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers men's tennis team opened 2020 with a back-to-back weekend against the Edinboro Fighting Scots and the Ashland Eagles. Walsh hosted Edinboro on Saturday (Feb. 1) before taking on Ashland in Lexington, Ohio on Sunday (Feb. 2).
Both matches came down to one singles bout as Walsh fell 4-3 to both teams.
Saturday vs. Edinboro
Walsh took two of the three doubles matches, opening the match with a 1-0 advantage. Filip Kulynych and Clemens Wagner were 6-4 winners in second doubles while the duo of Dawson Drummond and Guilherme Carneiro took the third doubles match 7-6 (7-5).
Edinboro won the first four singles matches, sealing the win for the Fighting Scots. Both Kulynych and Carneiro picked up their second wins of the day in fifth and sixth singles. Kulynych finished off a three set comeback with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 win. Carneiro dispatched his sixth singles opponent 6-0, 6-2 for the final 4-3 score.
Sunday at Ashland
The team of Wagner and Kulynych improved to 2-0 this weekend with a 7-6 win in second doubles but Ashland took the doubles point with two wins.
Carneiro tied the match at one with a 6-0, 6-1 win in his sixth singles match. Kulynych followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win in fifth singles as Walsh took a 2-1 lead. The Eagles won the first three singles matches, clinching the match. Alex Medina ended the day with a 7-5, 7-6 win at fourth singles.
The Cavaliers will take on Lewis at North Canton Racquet Club on Friday (Feb. 7) at 6:00 PM.
