CANTON, Ohio - Coming off the heels of a road loss in week one, the Walsh Cavaliers hosted the Ashland Eagles on Saturday (Sept. 14) in the home opener at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.
Walsh fell 34-12 to the Eagles in the first of two straight home games coming in September.
Ashland scored on their final two drives of the first quarter on a 31-yard field goal and a nine-yard TD pass as they led 10-0 after the first 15 minutes of play.
The Eagles added a 21-yard field goal following a Walsh turnover on downs in the first five minutes of the second quarter.
Ashland's next drive ended abruptly when Stephen Baugh picked off an Ashland pass and gave the Cavaliers great field position. Two plays later, Nick Gassman found Dillon Smith in the endzone for a five-yard touchdown pass. Walsh closed the gap to 13-6 with 3:34 left in the half after the extra point was blocked.
On the next drive, Ashland got a six-yard QB keeper TD and took a 20-6 lead into the locker room.
The visitors in purple and white scored the only touchdown of the third quarter on a three-yard pass. Walsh trailed 27-6 with six minutes left in the third.
After Walsh got two key plays from Gassman to Koby Adu-Poku to end the third quarter, Gassman opened the fourth quarter with a one-yard touchdown run. The lead was trimmed to 27-12 following the no good extra point.
Ashland closed the scoring with a one-yard TD run in the final minute of the game, as the Eagles won 34-12.
Walsh compiled 196 yards of total offense in week two. Gassman had 11 completions for 147 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Adu-Poku rushed for 58 yards and caught four passes for 68 yards.
The Cavaliers will open Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play with a game against Tiffin on Saturday (Sept. 21) at 1:00 PM.
