Walsh fell in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener on the road at Northwood University by a score of 28-16 Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers now stand at 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The Timberwolves improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
The Cavaliers struck first as Tim Carter (So., 6-0, Columbus, OH/Bishop Watterson) kicked a 20-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 5:39 remaining in the first quarter. Northwood struck back on the ensuing kickoff as Cameron Jackson scored on an 88-yard return and gave the hosts a 7-3 lead. The Timberwolves scored another touchdown just under two minutes before halftime, but the Cavaliers were able to answer with a 34-yard pass from Jack Dawson (Sr., 6-2, Columbiana, OH/South Range) to Anthony Schrock (So., 6-3, Wadsworth, OH/HS) to cut the lead down to 14-10.
Northwood scored again on a one-yard plunge by Cameron Jackson midway through the third quarter to increase its lead to 11 once again. The Cavaliers answered the call once again with a rushing touchdown of their own as George Walker (Fr., 5-9, Springfield, OH/Glen Mills) punched it in from nine yards out. That would be the closest Walsh would get, however, as the Timberwolves added another touchdown two minutes later to cap the scoring in the game.
The Cavaliers matched up well with Northwood and were able to outgain the Timberwolves 283 to 265. Schrock finished with five receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown to lead all receives. Walker led the Cavs in rushing with eight carries for 66 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Fehrenbach (Sr., 6-4, Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) paced the defense with eight total tackles including two tackles for loss and a quarterback sack.
Walsh will play in its home opener next week as the Cavs host Michigan Tech at Fawcett Stadium. A noon kickoff is scheduled.
