Field Athletes Shine At Cedarville Open

(CEDARVILLE, Ohio) – The Walsh track & field team was back in competition again at Cedarville's Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open today. The Cavaliers sent a strong contingent of field-only athletes and came away with impressive results with both the men and women scoring 40 points in the team standings.

Kaitlyn Barber turned in a first-place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 3.64 meters to hit the NCAA Division II provisional mark.

Karley Dougherty placed first in the javelin with a throw of 35.12 meters. Alexandra Rodgers was right behind her in third place with a mark of 32.72 meters.

Malia Turley was runner-up in the hammer throw with a distance of 50.28 meters. Payton Breehl finished eighth in the same event with a throw of 42.38 meters.

Morrisa Mallory finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 11.88 meters. She also placed seventh in the discus with a distance of 36.94 meters.

Overall Walsh finished with 40 points in the team scoring, but only participated in field events on the day.

For the men, Andrew Dowdell placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 4.76 meters, just .04 shy of the NCAA Division II provo mark. Dowdell was also second in the javelin with a throw of 50.48 meters. Marcus Penza followed in sixth place with a throw of 43.26 meters.

James Miller was second in the shot put with a throw of 15.58 meters. Dante Penza was sixth in the same event with a toss of 14.71 meters.

Bradley Gallitz was fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 50.66 meters. Penza was eighth with a throw of 47.16 meters.

Bucyrus Palo was seventh in the discus with a distance of 41.04 meters.

Walsh finished seventh in the team standings with 40 points from just participating in field events.

The Cavaliers will be back in action this Friday and Saturday at Mount Union's John Homon Open.
