(KENT, Ohio) – The Walsh track and field teams wrapped up the calendar year with the Kent State Golden Flash Gala over the weekend and had plenty to be excited about. There were quite a few athletes who placed, but the highlight of the day was Kaitlyn Barber qualifying for the indoor national championships already in the pole vault.
Barber, a two-time All-American in the event, did so by clearing 4.02 meters (13 feet 2.25 inches), good enough for third place at the meet which featured Division I competition.
Elsewhere in women's action, Katelyn Luther finished sixth in the mile run with a time of 5:33.26, Meredith Fennell placed seventh in the 60 meter hurdles finals with a time of 9.03, and Jetaiya Smith finished eighth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.63.
On the men's side, Dante Penza broke the school record in the shot put with a throw of 17.18 meters (56 feet 4.5 inches) and hit the NCAA Division II provisional mark in the process. He finished fourth at Kent State. Marcus Myers placed sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 18.39 meters, also clearing the Division II provo mark.
Other who did well in field events included Varney Pelima who placed fourth in the high jump at 1.95 meters (6 feet 4.75 inches) and sixth in the triple jump at 13.75 meters (45 feet 1.5 inches).
In track events, Eric Riesterer placed second in the mile run with a time of 4:47.13, Hunter Williams placed third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.77, Solomon Yoder placed third in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.98, and Lane Knock placed seventh in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.35 meters.
