(NEW ORLEANS) – As if Walsh didn't have enough to celebrate regarding cross country this week, more good news came in today with the new top 25 polls and regional awards given by the USTFCCCA.
Both the men's and women's teams are now ranked in the top 15. On top of that, Sarah Berger has been named the Midwest Region's Women's Athlete of the Year while Head Coach Rob Mizicko has been named the Midwest Region's Men's Coach of the Year.
Berger earned the accolades after winning the Midwest Region title at Cedarville this past Saturday. She completed the course in 21:19.3. Berger also claimed the G-MAC Championship individual title.
Mizicko, in his sixth year at Walsh, led the Cavaliers to a fourth-place finish at the Midwest Region Championships. Walsh also captured the G-MAC title under Mizicko's watch this season.
In the national polls, the women's team remained a top 10 program once again at No. 10. They have been ranked inside the top 10 for the last three polls that have been released.
The men made the biggest jump of anyone in the nation to No. 14. The Cavaliers were No. 19 in the previous poll before they finished fourth in the regional championships and were awarded an at-large bid to the national championships a week from Saturday.
Those national championships will mark the end of the season for the No. 10 women's and No. 14 men's programs. The race will be held in Evansville, Ind., at Angel Mounds.
