Fab Five Will Lead Cavs Into National Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS) – Three women and two men will represent Walsh at the 2018 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships next week in Charlotte, North Carolina. Four of them – Kaitlyn Barber, Sarah Berger, Andra Lehotay, and Marcus Myers – have been to and succeeded at the national stage to become All-Americans. One, Jacob Kernell, will be new to championship scene.

Both Berger and Myers will be competing in two events. Berger qualified for more, but has officially declared for the 1,500 meter run and the 5,000 meter run. She will enter with the top seed time in the 1,500 meters at 4:18.67 which she recorded at the Raleigh Relays on March 30. Her best 5K time was recorded more recently as she ran a 16:18.85 at Hillsdale's GINA Relays on April 26. The time ranks fifth in the nation.

Myers also comes in as a top seed in the hammer throw. His mark of 67.12 meters set the standard at Ashland's Alumni Open on April 27. The next closest mark is nearly nine feet back at 64.38 meters. He will also compete in the discus where he stands No. 13 in the country with a seed mark of 54.16 meters set at the G-MAC outdoor championships on May 3.

Barber will close out her excellent career in the pole vault. She will enter with the seventh-best mark in the field at 4.00 meters. Barber recorded the mark at Ashland's Alumni Open on April 27.

Lehotay will once again join Berger in the 1,500. The sophomore sensation's best time this season stands at 4:23.48 also recorded at the Raleigh Relays on March 30.

Kernell joins the field after making the most of the last chance meets a week ago. Previously on the outside looking in, Kernell went to the North Central College Dr. Keeler Meet last Thursday and ran a 9:00.76 to vault him into the top 15. He'll have the No. 14 seed time of those who declared.
