(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh picked up its first win of the season by way of a 16-9 triumph over Lourdes University on a sunny Friday afternoon at Vasco Field. The Cavaliers (1-2) and Gray Wolves (1-7) were originally supposed to meet last Wednesday before weather postponed the contest.
The Cavs started the game about as well as they could have hoped with three goals scored in the first 94 seconds of the game. Becca Heicher (Fr., Commerce Twp., MI/Hilliard Darby) started the scoring with a goal 31 seconds in. Morgan Costa (Fr., Cincinnati, OH/Lakota East) and Brianna Moss (Fr., Brunswick, OH/HS) followed suit with scores of their own.
Lourdes answered with two goals of its own to make the score 3-2, but Walsh answered with five consecutive scores en route to a 9-4 halftime advantage. After the break, the Gray Wolves scored four of the first six goals to pull within 11-8. It was the closest they could get to the Cavaliers, but the Walsh defense was able to shut down Lourdes the rest of the way. The Gray Wolves scored only one goal in the last 10 minutes while Walsh put up five of its own.
Moss was the star of the day as she scored six goals. Four of them came on free positions where she was a perfect 4-of-4 inside the zone. Defensively she gave Lourdes problems all day with seven ground balls and tallied six draw controls. Brianna Nobile (Fr., Westerville, OH/Olentangy Orange) also had a huge game with a hat trick and an assist for four points. She added four ground balls and six draw controls.
Tia Tyler (So., Columbus, OH/St. Francis DeSales) started the game in goal and made three saves on nine shots faced. Mo Chalko (Fr., Mentor, OH/HS) played the second half and made four saves on 12 shots faced.
Walsh will be back in action when it takes on Notre Dame College this Tuesday at 3 p.m. It will be part of a doubleheader with men's lacrosse who will play afterwards at 6 p.m.
