(HIRAM, Ohio) - Walsh separated itself near the end of the game to take a 10-6 decision over host Hiram on a chilly Thursday evening. The Cavaliers evened up their record at 2-2 while the Terriers dropped to 3-4 on the season.
After Hiram scored the first goal of the game, Walsh responded with three consecutive goals to take a 3-1 lead with 19:39 still left in on the first period clock. The Terriers answered quickly with two goals of their own over the next six minutes to tie the game. Both teams added a goal before they went into halftime tied at 4-4.
The second half started in similar fashion as the first in the sense that Hiram scored early, Walsh scored consecutive goals to take the lead, and the Terriers scored again to tie the game. This time Walsh closed the game with the final four goals.
Maria Nobile (Fr., Westerville, OH/Olentangy Orange) put Walsh on top for good with a goal at 18:07 left in the half. It was a while until the Cavs scored again, but Aly Jajack (Fr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) and Brianna Moss (Fr., Brunswick, OH/HS) iced the game on free position shots with around four minutes left. Nobile scored again with eight seconds left to set up the final score.
Moss led the offense with four goals. She was also strong in other areas of the field with three ground balls and three draw controls. Nobile gave Walsh a strong 1-2 punch with two goals and an assist. She added seven draw controls, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers.
Mo Chalko (Fr., Mentor, OH/HS) and Tia Tyler (So., Columbus, OH/St. Francis DeSales) split time in goal once again. Chalko picked up the win after she entered just after the second half started and made two saves on the day.
Walsh will now set its sights on Alderson-Broaddus which marks the conference opener for the Maroon and Gold. The Cavaliers will travel to Philippi, W.Va., on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. start.
