(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh fell to Malone in the 21st Annual Mayors' Cup game by a score of 74-66 at Alumni Arena on New Year's Eve. It was the Cavaliers' (7-6) final non-conference game of the season. The Pioneers (7-4) forced a season-split after they fell to Walsh earlier this season at Osborne Hall.
Alex Hochstedler led Walsh with 21 points on 7-of-18 from the field and added five rebounds. She tied Malone's Hannah McCue for game-high honors. Brittni Clopton and Jalynn Graham each tallied 10 points in the game.
The contest was similar to the first meeting and fought tooth and nail as one might expect in a rivalry. The Cavaliers led 14-11 after one quarter of play before Malone bounced back and took a 30-29 advantage into halftime.
Between the last minute of the third and the first seven of the fourth, the Pioneers started to pull away with a 24-2 run that didn't stop until Brooklyn Wooten sank a 3-pointer. The Cavs were able to get back within seven after a layup by Hochstedler, but the Cavs ran out of time.
The Cavs will return to GLIAC action on Thursday when they host Wayne State. Tip-off with the Warriors is set for 5:30 p.m.
