Scrappy Cavs Battle By Wheeling Jesuit 56-52

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh handed Wheeling Jesuit its first defeat of the season with a scrappy 56-52 victory at Alumni Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers (4-2) have now won four-straight as they head into conference play.

Holly Grober separated a 52-52 tie on a jumper with 1:15 left to put Walsh up for good on an assist from Brittni Clopton. Clopton also came up big on the opposite end of the court with a block on the Cardinals' (5-1) Chenelle Moore's layup attempt with 50 seconds left. She had three total in the game.

With time still on the clock, Walsh was able to take the clock down and get an offensive rebound before Grober sank another jumper to set up the final margin with five seconds left. She finished with 12 points off the bench and was 5-of-7 from the field.

Clopton led all scorers with 16 points. She too blistered the nets as she was 6-of-8 from the field. Alex Hochstedler added 12 points. Jalynn Graham had a solid all-around game with seven points, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists.

The Cavs started out slow and trailed 19-12 after one quarter of play, but roared back in the second quarter to take the lead with a 14-2 run after Clopton converted an and-one opportunity for a 26-21 advantage.

Both teams were tied at 32-32 at halftime.

The Maroon and Gold will now head to the Upper Peninsula to start GLIAC play this week. First up will be a contest with Northern Michigan on Thursday. Tip-off with the Wildcats is scheduled for 6 p.m.
