(FAIRMONT, W.Va.) – Four Cavaliers scored in double figures as Walsh defeated Fairmont State by a score of 88-77 for its first win of the season. The Maroon and Gold improved to 1-2 on the season while the Falcons suffered their first loss and fell to 2-1.
Walsh got out of the gate with an 11-0 run to start the game and kept the lead for the remainder of the game to give Head Coach Kate Bruce her first career victory.
It didn't come easy, however, as the Falcons slowly chipped away at the lead and came within one after a Deidra Combs layup with 7:55 to go in the third quarter. The Cavaliers immediately responded with the next seven points to push the score to 53-45, and Fairmont State never really threatened again. The Cavs' largest lead of night was 14.
Jalynn Graham was the star of the night as she exploded for a career-high 28 points. The senior guard blistered the nets as she shot 10-of-13 from the floor. That included 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Alex Hochstedler added 19 with a big chunk of that coming from the charity stripe. She went to the line 15 times and made 12.
Emily Westphal added 13 and Brooklyn Wooten scored 10 to round out the double-figure scorers. Brittni Clopton was close to being a fifth with eight points, but did so on the glass with 13 rebounds to help Walsh control the rebounding department 41-32.
Walsh also had its best shooting night of the short season as it made 27-of-50 from the field for 54 percent. The Cavs were 8-of-19 from 3-point range.
The Cavs now set their sights on Saturday for their first game against arch rival Malone. This contest will take place at Osborn Hall with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
