(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - Walsh battled visiting Roberts Wesleyan tough but couldn't pull out the victory as it fell 12-7 on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Vasco Field. The Cavaliers are now 2-2 on the season while the Redhawks improve to 6-1.
Defense was the name of the game early on as both teams scored two goals in the first quarter. Roberts Wesleyan's offense then created some separation with three consecutive goals to start the second quarter, but Nicholas Castorf (Fr., Holbrook, NY/Sachem) scored last in the half on the assist from Alex Hudgens (Fr., South Lyon, MI/HS) to make it a 5-3 game going into halftime.
The Redhawks started the third quarter much like the second with three-straight goals to go up 8-3. The Cavs added a pair on a goal by Ben Stephens (Sr., Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) at the end of the third and a score by Ian Maurer (Sr., Jackson, OH/HS) early in the fourth to cut the deficit to three at 8-5. It was the closest Walsh could get as Roberts Wesleyan outscored the Cavs 4-2 the rest of the way.
Dylan Ciolino (Fr., Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) and Roberts Wesleyan's Matt Hamilton both had impressive games between the pipes. Ciolino played the entire game and made 17 saves on 41 shots faced. Hamilton also came up big for the Redhawks with 16 saves on 46 shots faced.
Walsh will now set its sights on Mercyhurst in a rescheduled game from last Tuesday. The Lakers are ranked No. 11 in the nation and will visit Vasco Field on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
